"What is distinctive about Greek lyric poetry? How should we conceptualize it in relation to broader categories such as literature / song / music / rhetoric / history? What critical tools might we use to analyse it? How do we, should we, can we relate to its intensities of expression, its modes of address, its uses of myth and imagery, its attitudes to materiality, its sense of its own time, and its contextualizations? These are questions that this discussion seeks to investigate, exploring and analysing a range of influential methodologies that have shaped the recent history of the field".

Here in one volume is some of the most exciting poetry written during the last thirty years, culled from the pages of one of America's foremost literary magazines. The Quarterly Review of Literature has been among the first to present many significant poets of our time. In addition to publishing the work of new poets, it has made available little-known work of writers of established reputation. It has brought to the reading public both experimental and traditional verse, and foreign poetry in distinguished translations as well as poetry originally written in English. Its pages have been open, in the words of its editors, "to any work that reflects a dedication to ultimately painstaking art." This volume contains the work of 146 foreign and American poets. It is thus not only a remarkable anthology, but a valuable retrospective of the literary scene.Originally published in 1976.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

In medieval Ashkenaz piyyut commentary was a popular genre that consisted of 'open texts' that continued to be edited by almost each copyist. Although some early commentators can be identified, it is mainly compilers that are responsible for the transmitted form of text. Based on an ample corpus of Ashkenazic commentaries the study provides a taxonomy of commentary elements, including linguistic explanations, treatment of hypotexts, and medieval elements, and describes their use by different commentators and compilers. It also analyses the main techniques of compilation and the various ways they were employed by compilers. Different types of commentaries are described that target diverse audiences by using varied sets of commentary elements and compilatory techniques. Several commentaries are edited to illustrate the different commentary types.

This book is the first cognitive literary analysis in the field of medieval French literature. As such, it focuses on the question of audience in the Old French epic poems known as chansons de geste . Bringing to bear evidence from historical, literary, and manuscript sources, from the perspective of cognitive theory, Leverage demonstrates that there were multiple, complex audiences of the poems, and that common to each was a more personal, engaged, emotive relationship with the poems than has been recognized previously. Central to the audience’s experience of the poems and to the aesthetic of the genre, is memory, both in the sense of a cognitive process and as a theory that has occupied the interest of rhetoricians and philosophers from Antiquity to the present. The book is of interest to medievalists, cognitive theorists, and cognitive scientists working in memory-based text processing.
